Madison Avenue, New York City, New York

Madison Avenue is a north-south avenue in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, United States, that carries northbound one-way traffic. It is named after and arises from Madison Square, which is itself named after James Madison, the fourth President of the United States. Since the 1920s, the street's name has been synonymous with the American advertising industry.

Actress Anne Baxter, who starred in I Confess (1953), died from a brain aneurysm on December 12th, 1985, whilst walking down Madison Avenue.

Alfred Hitchcock's Cameo

The Scouting New York web site identified the location Hitchcock makes his cameo appearance in North by Northwest as being on Madison between 44th and 45th Streets. It's feasible the exact location was outside the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's headquarters at 347 Madison Avenue.

C.I.T. Building, 650 Madison Avenue

The film's opening sequence establishes that Roger Thornhill works at 650 Madison Avenue, known as the C.I.T. Building at the time of filming. As Thornhill and his secretary exit the building, the "650" is visible on the wall behind them and they then catch a cab on the corner of Madison and 60th Street to travel the two blocks to the Plaza Hotel.[1]

The eight storey C.I.T. Building was designed by architects Harrison & Abramovitz and constructed in 1957.[2]

Many sources state that the façade of the building was also used for Saul Bass' animated titles, but it was actually the Seagram Building on Park Avenue.[3]
