Phillip Vandamm

[[James Mason]] as Phillip Vandamm

Phillip Vandamm is a major character in North by Northwest (1959) and was played by James Mason.

Initially, Hitchcock and screenwriter Ernest Lehman had envisaged Yul Brynner in the role of the suave master spy (then named "Mendoza" in the early script drafts), but the actor proved unavailable. With James Mason heading the list of possible actors, the character was renamed "Vandamm" in Lehman's final script draft (dated October 1958).[1][2]
